Catherine E. Kadar

October 21, 1941 – August 29, 2011

Catherine (Kay) Elizabeth Kadar, age 96, of Fairfield, the devoted wife of the late Charles C. Kadar, passed away at the Carolton Convalescent Home on Monday, August 29, 2011.  Born in New York, NY she moved to Connecticut as a child and attended the Stratford School System and Butler Business College. Catherine was a lifelong resident of Fairfield.

She was a respected businesswoman and at a very early age she was named the first female Manager of the Lowes Poli Theatre in Bridgeport in 1937.  Kay and her husband, Charlie, were the owners of the legendary Larry’s Diner in Fairfield for over thirty-eight years.  They also owned the Community Diner in the center of Fairfield where the Bank of America now resides and the Beachside Bar at Penfield Beach in Fairfield.  She was a member of the Fayerweather Yacht Club and served as the Treasurer of the Ladies Auxiliary for fifty years. She was also a member of the Eastern Star and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. 

Kay is survived by her two loving daughters, Susan A. Felis and her husband, Vincent of Shelton, and Kathryn Kadar Scherwerts of Fairfield; one sister, Mae Chapman of Clearwater, FL; three grandchildren, Justin R. Cooper of Fairfield, David J. Kovacs of Cornish, NH, Dorinda A. Seamans and her husband Timothy of Wilton, CT; great grandchildren; David, Bradley and Todd Seamans of Wilton, CT; Jane, Laura, Henry and Emily Kovacs of Meriden, NH and several nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her three sisters, Margaret Schick of Fld, Anna Scully of Fld/CA and Veronica Fucci of Fld.    Mrs. Kadar’s daughters want to express their gratitude to the Carolton Convalescent Home, and especially their heartfelt gratitude to the Windsor Wing Staff and the Recreation Department Staff for the exceptional loving care they gave to their Mother. 

Friends are invited to call on Friday, September 2, 2011 from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Shaughnessey Banks Funeral Home, 50 Reef Road in Fairfield Center followed by a Memorial Service with the Rev. Judith Rhodes officiating.  Interment to follow in Mountain Grove Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 372 Danbury Road, Wilton, CT  06897-2523 or the Connecticut Humane Society, 455 Post Road, East, Westport, CT  06880.
