Angelus E. Papageorge

May 25, 1928 – June 10, 2011

Angelus “Ange”, E. Papageorge, age 83, the beloved husband of Bess Spilios Papageorge passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on June 10, 2011. He married the love of his life, his “Bessie” on June 20, 1948, and they would have celebrated their 63rd anniversary. Born in Fairfield on May 25, 1928 to the late Elias and Fanny Papageorge, he attended Roger Ludlowe High School and was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

He was a lifelong Fairfield resident and also was a volunteer fireman for the town for over 50 years. Ange was proud of his Greek Heritage and was an active parishioner of the Holy Trinity Orthodox Church looking forward to volunteering at the yearly Festival. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Senior Citizens and the Order of AHEPA. Ange began his love of cooking and working in the restaurant business as a teenager. He helped in Westport at the family run Club Grill Diner and was co-owner of the Center Restaurant in Fairfield. After many years as a restaurateur he worked for various food services managing their cafeterias at Sikorsky Aircraft, Stauffer Chemical and Norwalk Hospital. When Ange retired he enjoyed doing his own yard work and would always came in the house to share that someone had stopped to talk with him to reminisce, catch up or just beep and wave. He could always be counted on to volunteer his services, time and food to charity fundraisers. Another activity he enjoyed was spending time in Westport at Oscar’s Delicatessen, where he would often talk of his family, especially of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

By far Ange’s greatest pleasure was planning holiday dinners when his entire family would gather. The Family would also like to thank the West Haven V.A. and Connecticut Hospice for their assistance and compassionate care for allowing him to remain in his home. This was in accordance with his wishes. In addition to his loving wife he is survived by his son, Elias ‘Lee” and wife, Mary-Jo of Fairfield; Frances “Fanny” P. Kochiss and her husband, Bob, also of Fairfield; Lucas “Luke” Papageorge and his fiancé, Brenda of Easton and Sandra “Sandy” P. Mongillo and her husband, Joe of Niantic; a sister, Marie Dimitriadis of Fairfield; a brother-in-law, Charles Turnas of Oviedo, FL; A “Papou” to 11 grandchildren, Melissa, Alexandra, Robert, Alexander, Christopher, Belinda, Angelus, Lucas, Stephanie, Joseph and Zachary; and a “Great- Papou” to 10 great grandchildren, India, Plum, Evan, Alexa, Taylor, Frankie, Charlie, Olive, Jack and Anna. His three brothers, George, Peter and Paul Papageorge and his sister, Frances “Foo” Turnas, predeceased him. Friends are invited to attend his funeral services on Tuesday, June 14, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. Interment to follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will take place on Monday, June 13, 2011 from 4-8 p.m. at the Shaughnessey Banks Funeral Home, 50 Reef Road in Fairfield Center. A Trisagion Service will be held at_6:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Donations may be made in his memory to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 4070 Park Avenue, Bridgeport, CT 06604.
